The Fire Station Visit by Little Chaitanyans

At Chaitanya we start in the Kindergarten itself “To See; to Do; to Know; to be Aware; to Apply.”

A visit to the Fire Station in Gandhinagar on February 5th naturally had all our little ones “fired up”. We organized a visit to the Fire Station in Sector 17, Gandhinagar on 5th February 2014.

This trip was planned to explore and identify, to enhance knowledge and learning. Smartly turned out in the School’s sports uniform, the children boarded the school vans with great enthusiasm. The Chaitanya school banners on the school vans added to the excitement.

They had already been told that a Fire station is the headquarters of a fire brigade, where fire engines and other equipment are housed.

Staff members of the Fire station welcomed our students and shared interesting information about the Station. The Staff made sure that all explanations were age-appropriate and could be understood at the child’s level.

They explained that the Fire station helpline number is 101.

It was reassuring to know that they could be contacted at all hours of the day and night as someone is always on duty.
They displayed the equipments used by them in the times of emergency.

A Hydraulic Platform used also in the maintenance of street Lights cities and towns. Maximum Working height is 20 meters to 40 meters (i.e. Approx 12 stories building) A water tanker is attached to the hydraulic platform with a capacity of 2000 to 10000 litres is used to put out the fire. Metal cutters, lock cutters, spreader, lifting bags and life jackets are all part of the equipment. Fire extinguishers with water, foam, dry chemicals and carbon- di-oxide etc. are used to deal with different types of fires set off by ordinary combustibles, electrical or liquid fires are also available in the market.

The visit came to life with the Mock Drill - in preparation for a potentially real life situation. They gave us a demo to explain how they treat injured people during emergencies.

Fire drill- A fire drill is a method of practicing the evacuation of a building for a fire or other emergency. Generally, a fire alarm is activated and the building is evacuated as though a real fire had occurred. The demo depicted the different nozzles used.
We were told that 126 Bikes with fire extinguishers are soon to be commissioned in the different wards to put out the fire at congested places. A Road Sweeper Machine was also displayed.

The students of Sr. KG were taught that they should not switch on/off any electronic gadget in case of fire and all windows should be opened.

The children were impressed with the display of all the fire-fighting equipment. They also sang the rhyme ‘People Who Help Us’ with the lines …….
I'm a fire fighter
How do i help ?
You can put out fires,
With my help....
In a play-way method a Quiz was conducted by the class teachers on their return to the school.

They enjoyed the visit thoroughly and the parents were duly informed.
