Elizabeth Koshy, the Founder – Director of Chaitanya School, Gandhinagar; Secretary, SreeVidyaNiketan Trust

Elizabeth Koshy, the Founder – Director of Chaitanya School, Gandhinagar set up the institute to promote the idea of “Childhood for the Child? This idea bore fruit when she was joined by a number of like-minded people represented in the SreeVidyaNiketan Trust (SVNT ?see Trustees and Advisory Council)a charitable organisation where “Education is not a Business? She was nominated Secretary of the Trust at its inception in 2003. When she chose the name “Chaitanya?for the school, the Trust agreed unanimously as it embodied all the values, principles and philosophy that they wanted the generation next to have ?Vitality of Life, Self Knowledge and Awareness.

Elizabeth Koshy is convinced that English must be used only as a tool of communication in India and that special emphasis must be placed on Indian traditions and culture. She avers that this can best be done if the Indian diversity is used to advantage by “emphasising our similarities and celebrating our differences? Young Chaitanyans are exposed to this philosophy early in their schooling with the avowed mission of spreading peace and goodwill all around.
Even before the RTE was made mandatory, the SVNT was certain that the gifted, under-privileged child must be helped. The Chaitanya School Childhood for the Child venture is aimed at promoting the initiative of Quality Education for All. As Director, and with the full support of the Chairman, Trustees and Advisors of SVNT,she has initiated collaboration with NGO’s to implement and sustain this effort.

In the 10 years that she has been at the helm as Director of Chaitanya, she has effectively implemented and institutionalised new methodology and teaching ethos during which Chaitanya School in Gandhinagar has grown into an accepted and respected institution with classes from Nursery to Std X affiliated to the CBSE.

She provides key guidance on the choice of well-researched curriculum and teaching methodology for the school in consultation with the Trustees, Principal, external consultants and best international practice. Learning with Understanding and continuous in–house teacher training has successfully de-stressed education at Chaitanya. She is privileged to be supported by the qualified and eminent Trustees and Advisors on the SreeVidyaNiketan Trust.

She introduced the use of Phonics in English language teaching to pre-primary and primary children from non-English speaking backgrounds at Chaitanya.

As a free lance writer Elizabeth Koshy has contributed regular ‘middle?articles and topical opinion pieces to prestigious publications over a 20 year period.

Co- Founder of The Book Club, Gandhinagar, she pioneered the gathering of book lovers, authors, literati and eminent literary critics and academics in an eclectic gathering in the green environs of the State’s capital.
